Aims of Postgraduate English Courses

Postgraduate English Language Division

What We Are Trying To Achieve

The Postgraduate English Division at Eastern Mediterranean University works from the following principles:

1.  Success in Postgraduate Studies.
Postgraduate study at an English medium university such as EMU, requires a high level of proficiency in academic English, and requires advanced listening, reading, writing and speaking skills. The PLD courses aim to help students develop those skills to the highest possible level in order to help students perform at the best possible level in their postgraduate studies.

2. Academic and Professional Advancement
English is the global language of science, technology, research and business. Educational institutions and employers in a highly competitive environment are demanding an extremely high standard of English from candidates and applicants. The PLD courses aim to prepare students as far as possible for this world.
3. International Publication and Conferences
Good research will always want to find an international audience through research journals and conference presentations. Publication in international journals and successful presentations demand a high level of English. The PLD course sequence is designed with this in mind.

4. International Language Qualifications
Future academic and professional advancement may require that you have a formal English language qualification, such as IELTS. Accordingly, preparation for international language exams is built into the course sequence.

On graduating from EMU, you should be at the level of at least IELTS 7.0, and preferably higher, and the PLD would advise that you do not put your English language development 'to one side' until you have achieved this.
