Which Courses to Take

EMU Postgraduate English Language Courses

Which Courses Should We Take?

  • I have 6.5 or above on IELTS,  80 or above on TOEFL IBT, or 75 or above on the EMU Proficiency
  • I come from a country where English is the official language of education (e.g. India, Nigeria)
You are not required to take any Postgraduate English Courses. However, you should seriously consider taking the second year elective courses, ENGL523 and ENGL525, as these courses support you with the very demanding tasks of writing an extended thesis, and presenting academic research to an international audience. Do not however register for these courses until you are about to start work on your thesis.

  • I have 6.0 on IELTS, 74-79 on TOEFL IBT, or 60-74 on the EMU Proficiency.

You are required to take ENGL515 as a compulsory course in your first year. You should also seriously consider taking the second year elective courses, ENGL523 and ENGL525, as these courses support you with the very demanding tasks of writing an extended thesis, and presenting academic research to an international audience. Do not however register for these courses until you are about to start work on your thesis.

You may also want to improve your IELTS score, in which case you might like to take ENGL 521, which is an IELTS preparation course.

You may also register for ENGL513 if you wish, either before you take ENGL515, or at the same time. Some students who are keen to improve their English as much as possible choose this option.

  • I have 30-59 on the EMU Proficiency, and no valid international language qualification

  • I have below 30 on the EMU Proficiency
You are required to take ENGL 511 as a compulsory 20 hour course in your semester, before you start any postgraduate courses in your department.

You should then continue with the ENGL 513 and ENGL 515 courses, and seriously consider taking the  elective courses, ENGL521  ENGL523 and ENGL 525as these courses support you with the very demanding tasks of writing an extended thesis, and presenting academic research to an international audience.
  • I am a Turkish speaking student / studying in a Turkish medium programme. I need KPDS / UDS for entrance to a PhD programme.
Consider taking ENGL 531 and ENGL 533, which are general English courses that aim to prepare students for the KPDS and UDS exams.
