How Much Work is Involved

Class Hours

Most Postgraduate English courses have 4 class hours weekly. Additional projects and homework will be assigned.

The exceptions are:

ENGL 511: Intensive English for Postgraduate Students: 20 hours
ENGL 513: Academic English for Postgraduate Students: 6 hours

Office Hours

Office Hours with your Instructor are not compulsory but you are strongly encouraged to maintain regular contact with your instructor throughout the semester.

Passing the Courses

These are non-credit courses. At the end of the semester you will be granted a satisfactory grade, or an unsatisfactory grade based on your performance. If you receive an unsatisfactory grade on a compulsory course, you will be required to retake the course.

Amount of Work Required Outside Class

This depends on your level. As a general rule, improving one level on the IELTS framework, e.g. from 5.0-6.0 is thought to take at least 100 hours of focused, intensive study. A single course provides you with 50-60 hours of classroom-based instruction.
